Police in Paris shot at suspicious car: two dead

Two occupants of the vehicle were killed and a third injured, as the AFP news agency learned from police circles on Monday night. Accordingly, the officers wanted to control the car because it was driving in the wrong direction on the Pont Neuf bridge.

Instead of stopping, the driver is said to have headed for the police officers. The officers then opened fire. The police and prosecutors were on the spot with a large contingent. A body covered with a white sheet lay on the floor. The criminal police are investigating because of “attempted intentional killing of persons who are the bearers of public authority”.

Tourists report four shots

An Egyptian tourist who said he was on the terrace of a hotel near the Pont Neuf told AFP that he heard four shots. “When I looked, I saw a man running ten to fifteen meters. Then he collapsed. Apparently he was not the driver but a passenger.”

The Pont Neuf is located near the famous Louvre Museum. It spans the Seine island Île de la Cité, on which, among other things, the Notre-Dame Cathedral is located. The crime scene is about two kilometers as the crow flies from the Champs de Mars with the Eiffel Tower. Numerous supporters of President Emmanuel Macron celebrated his re-election there on Sunday evening. Macron had given a speech at the foot of the Eiffel Tower a few hours earlier.
