Russia said to bet on peace, but warned that the danger of a third world war is real

“Of course, everything will conclude with an agreement, as happens in any situation that includes the use of the Armed Forces, but its terms and conditions will be determined by the phase of hostilities in which this agreement becomes a reality,” said the head of the Russian diplomacy, Serguei Lavrov speaking to Channel One.

The official recalled that in the last face-to-face round of negotiations, held on March 29 in the Turkish city of Istanbul, Ukraine submitted its proposals for a possible agreement to Russia in writing, and Moscow assessed them positively.

“We quickly converted these proposals into the contractual language and delivered this project in agreement with our Ukrainian colleagues, then they presented us with their counter-proposals, which were radically different from those made in Istanbul,” the foreign minister noted.

The chancellor expressed his conviction that this was a big step backwards in the negotiations that “were done on the advice of American and British colleagues.”

“We have a feeling that the West wants Ukraine to continue to fight, to continue, as it seems to them, to tire, exhaust the Russian Army,” he said.

However, Lavrov accused Ukraine of “pretending” to want to negotiate and for this reason he again warned that there is a “real” danger that the armed conflict could lead to a third World war.

“The danger is serious, it is real, it cannot be underestimated,” he added. in an intervention for Russian television picked up by local news agencies and by the French AFP and the Spanish Europa Press.

Lavrov compared the current situation with that of the so-called Missile Crisis of 1962 and he recalled that “at that time there were rules, written rules”.

“The rules of conduct were very clear, it was clear in Moscow how Washington was behaving and Washington was clear how Moscow was behaving, but now there are few rules left,” he said.

So, in 1962, “there was a channel of communication in which the leaders trusted but now that channel does not exist and nobody is trying to create it, there are only timid attempts that have been made in the first phase, but they have not worked,” he said. .

The official added that his country “will continue to hold negotiations with the team sent by (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky, and contacts will continue.”

Lavrov accused Zelensky of “pretending” to negotiate, calling him “a good actor.”

“If you look closely and carefully read what it says, you will find thousands of contradictions,” he reinforced.
