The citizens were not only promised, but also contractually stipulated, that the space on which the arches of the railway bridge were assembled would be converted back to grassland once the structure was completed. Barely nine months after the opening of the new bridge, grass is literally growing over the assembly site.
This can be seen best from the bridge, from where you can also see that not only a classic lawn was planted here, but also a natural meadow flower, which City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens) calls an insect pasture. In addition, 35 trees have already been planted to provide shade.
In the selection, heat-tolerant species such as service tree, oak and two cherry trees have been selected, because the newly created oasis of relaxation is to become a central meeting place for many people in Linz. Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) sees this as a gift for all those looking for relaxation, especially for the people of Urfahr.
“Adventure space with recreational value”
Luger is convinced that the renatured assembly site with the very inviting redesign of the Danube bank area will be followed by the Danube Bay and the redesign of the fairgrounds, which will create a new “green mile” in Urfahr. “An adventure space with recreational value is being created here, which corresponds to the efforts to move Linz more closely to the Danube.
By the way: It will be a few months before the new local recreation area can actually be used and the barrier around the 12,000 square meter area disappears. You have to mow the lawn two or three more times and the flower meadow is just beginning to develop, so it would be counterproductive to let people out on the green space now, they say.
When the time comes, benches will also be set up to invite people to linger. The barrier will then logically also disappear.
