Several days after a mining accident in Poland, rescuers recovered four more dead miners. The operator of the mine announced on Wednesday that the number of fatalities had risen to ten. After a tremor in the Zofiowka coal mine in Jastrzebie-Zdroj in Upper Silesia, ten miners were missing on Saturday. Six of them have already been found dead in the past few days. The search for the other four victims was very difficult, the rescuers first had to pump water out of the accident site.
Only a week ago there had been two methane gas explosions in a mine belonging to the same company in Pniowek, not far from Katowice. Five people were recovered dead, several injured, seven more buried. The search for them was called off on Friday without result because it had become too dangerous for the rescuers themselves.
Two miners later died in hospital from severe burns sustained in the blast. On Tuesday evening, the clinic announced that another miner had died. This increases the number of fatalities after the accident in Pniowek to eight.
