This is provided for in a draft of an amendment to service law, which will be examined on Wednesday. As before, 5 ECTS points are also credited for the course. Teachers can choose between 50 euros per lesson and time off. Depending on the number of groups at the school, directors receive a total of between 600 and 1,000 euros.
The summer school will take place again this year in the last two weeks of vacation. Participation is voluntary for both students and teachers, and there are no grades. The lessons are held by students and teachers – in the previous year there were problems in some federal states to find enough staff for this. There was also criticism that students only receive ECTS points for their studies, but no financial compensation. The amendment is intended to make work at the summer school more attractive.
1000 euros for two weeks
In the future, students should receive 25 euros per lesson and be able to have 5 ECTS credited once for their studies. Since the summer school consists of four lessons per day and lasts two weeks, they end up with 1,000 euros. Teachers can choose (in addition to their normal salary) between 50 euros per lesson and a time off model. They receive 2,000 euros or are allowed to reduce their teaching commitments by one hour for the following school year.
Directors do not receive hourly pay, but are paid (again in addition to their normal salary) based on the number of summer school groups they serve at “their” school. There is 600 euros for groups of up to four, 800 euros for five to eleven groups and 1,000 euros for groups of twelve or more.
“School life without a summer school is already inconceivable in the third year of its existence,” said Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) in a broadcast. “Everyone who is involved in teaching at the summer school will now receive additional remuneration as a result of the amendment to the service law.”
“The summer school offers students a great opportunity to gain practical experience,” said Green education spokeswoman Sibylle Hamann. However, many would also have to earn money during the holidays. “25 euros an hour is an attractive offer for a good, meaningful summer job, and I hope that as many students as possible will take it up.”
