“Die Fledermaus” actually stands for New Year’s Eve and the Vienna State Opera. In fact. From the summer, however, it will also stand for Steyr, or rather for the Steyr Music Festival in the Schlossgraben, which will take place from July 21st to August 25th this year. And at the “[DI:] [FLE:DA:MAUS] reloaded in Janoska style” celebrates its world premiere.

experience for the audience

A new coat of paint for a classic? “No, it’s a lot more, for example there’s also a new version of the text,” says director Susanne Sommer. She adds: “We don’t want to continue as before, some of the characters are fighting back against what was before. We’re changing the perspective.” A new experience for the audience, because – as has been the case for the past two years – drinks will also be brought to the tables during the performance. And with it, champagne can not only be enjoyed on stage. Rehearsals begin on July 1 in Vienna, and on July 15, just a week before the premiere on July 21, the ensemble moves to Steyr. Artistic director Karl-Michael Ebner adds: “We bring the museum material into the present, and try to combine the good and the well-heard musically as well.” Namely with the Janoska ensemble, which has mastered the crossover from Strauss to the Beatles.

Speaking of Janoska: the ensemble, which brings the art of improvisation to perfection, will also present its new CD “The Big B’s”. “And accommodate Beethoven, Bach and Brahms in nine minutes,” enthuses Ebner. Who himself appears in the “Gemischtes Satz” with Günther Groissböck and the Philharmonia Schrammeln. “We recorded a new CD during the pandemic.” In addition, Gernot Kuli’s “Best of Ö3 Callboy” will also be presented in the Steyrer Schlossgraben.

In bad weather, performances are held in the Steyr City Theater, where there are just as many seats as in the moat.
