Neighbors rescued three kittens in the Innviertel after the mother died in an accident. They heard the screams from a shed in a yard in the Braunau district and alerted the owner. He was heartless and recommended killing the kittens with the words “Daschlogt’s hoid”. The neighbors then brought the few-day-old animals to the animal shelter of the Pfotenhilfe in Lochen, as reported on Wednesday.
“Extremely shocking” statement
The owner’s statement was “not only extremely shocking, it also shows that this should not have happened there for the first time,” Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler was outraged. The case was reported to the authorities. “Moreover, ‘wanton killing’ according to Section 222 of the Criminal Code is a crime that carries a two-year prison sentence – just like the murdered dog in Altlengbach. Some people may not yet be aware of that.”
Stadler raises the three kittens herself, whom she christened “Willi”, “Ostbahn” and “Kurti” in memory of Willi Resetarits, who died in an accident on Sunday, until they are old enough for adoption by animal-loving people.
Hard penalties for animal cruelty?
Pfotenhilfe also urged Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens) to raise the penalties for animal cruelty to three years as quickly as possible. “Because animal cruelty and murder is certainly not perceived by the population as a trivial offense and must therefore finally be taken seriously by politicians and the authorities,” said Stadler.
