Epilepsy: New drug against seizures

A relatively new drug from the manufacturer Angelini Pharma can help the other third, according to a press conference.

Epileptics who cannot be kept seizure-free with medication have a two to three times higher risk of dying earlier than the general population, said Tim von Oertzen. “We also know that epilepsy is an impairment of general life.” Patients often suffer from the stigma of the disease, are usually not allowed to drive vehicles and live with the constant uncertainty of when the next attack will occur. The greatest goal of therapy is therefore freedom from seizures. The highest probability of epilepsy occurring is up to the age of 20 – for example due to malformations of the brain – and then again after the age of 60 due to “diseases of old age” such as stroke, tumor or dementia.
