ÖBB result back to pre-crisis level – passenger numbers not yet

The figures for 2019 (477 million passengers in local, long-distance and bus transport) were reached with a total of 323 million passengers who used ÖBB services, but were nowhere near as good. The operating result (EBT), on the other hand, reached 170 million euros and also exceeded the value of 2019, not only that of 2020 (2020: 59 million euros; 2019: 169 million euros).

From an economic point of view, these financial figures have left the corona pandemic behind, said ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä and CFO Arnold Schiefer at the balance sheet press conference on Friday in front of journalists in Vienna. The aim is to catch up again to the passenger numbers from before the 2019 crisis. “The result is fed by positive results from all areas of the group,” emphasized the ÖBB boss. The result fits in well with the series of the past few years, if you leave the Corona crisis year 2020 “outside”.

Matthä said they were “on course again. That ensures our ability to invest.” By 2027, they want to put 4.1 billion euros into the renewal of trains and buses alone. CFO Schiefer emphasized a positive result in all three subgroups (passenger transport, freight transport and infrastructure).

At 94.1 million net tons, freight transport was more than 10 million net tons below 2019 (105.3 million net tons). Compared to 2020, transport performance fell by 1 percent.

Group sales reached almost 4.36 billion euros last year (2020: 4.08 billion euros, 2019: 4.41 billion euros). Total revenues came to 6.99 billion euros (2020: 6.72 billion euros, 2019: 6.95 billion euros).

With exactly 322.9 million people broken down into one day, almost 900,000 people were transported daily by ÖBB trains or buses. Overall, this corresponds to an increase of 13 percent compared to 2020. There was an increase of 15 percent in local transport. The strongest increases were in the eastern region, Carinthia and Tyrol. In long-distance traffic, the increase was around 18 percent – due to the resumption of international travel from May 2021. Punctuality was 96.7 percent in the overall system (2020: 97.2 percent).
