From the beginning of the pandemic to the end of January 2022, there were 1.88 million infections and 73,301 hospitalizations, which means a rate of 3.9 percent.
Compared to the delta variant, which was still dominant in autumn 2021 and up to the turn of the year, the hospitalization rate fell by 65 percent during the omicron wave, and by as much as 81 percent in the intensive care units, reports the GÖG. In the case of the zero to nine-year-olds and the ten to 19-year-olds, however, the decline was smaller, at 16 and 34 percent, respectively, than in older people.
Despite the lower hospitalization rate, 8.1 percent of all Covid patients in hospitals and 27.4 percent of intensive care patients died in January and February. Throughout the course of the pandemic, this proportion is significantly higher at 16.2 and 35.3 percent respectively.
