Hunters warn: “The wolf is spreading faster and faster and is not harmless”

“Dreamers and dreamers” is what the Rohrbach district master hunter, Martin Eisschiel, calls everyone who believes that the spread of the wolf will not cause any problems. “The wolf is spreading faster than we would like. And this development will be neither harmless nor without problems – even if experts and NGOs want to tell us that,” he said unequivocally at the Rohrbach District Hunters’ Day. “So many people have a say on this topic and everyone thinks they know their way around. But not everyone who watches the universe every week is an expert. We hunters are the experts when it comes to hunting.

And they are already noticing a change in the behavior of the red deer on the Czech border. Above all, however, in agriculture and tourism, the Jägermeister expects major problems in the future. He only gets good advice to a limited extent: “Anyone who says a wolf-proof fence isn’t difficult to erect has never built one themselves,” he says. Livestock guard dogs might work. But: “It must be clear to us that the dog protects the herd from all (!) intruders; So also from hikers and walkers”. He agrees with the experts who say that wolves are basically not dangerous for humans. but neither is a cow on the mountain pasture. “We all know the headlines.” The wolf is a carnivore and once well established a pack animal. “I wonder how much longer you want to watch,” says Eisschiel.

It gets narrower in the forest

The fact that humans and wolves meet has not only become more likely because of the increase in the wolf population. “Corona has triggered a longing for nature and people are flocking to the forests. We do not want to and must not forbid anyone to do this. But all this has to be directed and channeled”. Because the forest is first and foremost a habitat for wild animals.

Good dialogue with farmers

All in all, district master hunter Martin Eisschiel used this year’s hunter’s day to take stock: “The cooperation between landowners and hunters works very well. Wherever you talk to each other, there is always a solution”. A total of 935 hunters (75 of them female) practice hunting in the Rohrbach district. At 102 percent, the number of shots was even slightly exceeded in the past hunting year.

Considerable routing

Rohrbach’s hunters were particularly thoughtful when the hunting horn signaled “Sau dead!”. Because never before have they laid such a long wild boar trail in one year: 385 wild boar were shot last year. A year earlier it was 138. “This is a new record value, which also gives us a certain amount of concern. Especially in the Bohemian Forest border region and in the Donauleiten, the wild boar population presents us with major challenges,” said the Jägermeister.

A certain wolf effect is also noticeable in red deer. 97 instead of 116 in the previous year were removed. The plan was fulfilled with 5796 deer shot. There were also 762 rabbits, 426 wild ducks, 254 wild pigeons, 96 pheasants, 61 woodcocks and 15 partridges.

The predatory game section is also impressive with 879 foxes, 732 martens, 179 badgers, 98 polecats, 79 stoats and an otter. (fur)
