While around 200 people are said to have taken part in the pro-Russia demo, there were around 1,000 in the protest movement against the war in Ukraine, the online portal “Telex.hu” reported. The latter was organized by the Hungarian-Ukrainian Cultural Association and the Association “Ukraine Unity”.
The associations had unsuccessfully asked the police to revoke the permit for the pro-Russia demonstration organized on Facebook. In speeches by the organizers – among them, according to the media, right-wing extremists, opponents of vaccination and conspiracy theorists – the USA was blamed for the Ukraine war, while the “excessive sanctions” would in turn burden the world with a food and energy crisis, the online portal quoted.
At the pro-Ukraine demonstration it was emphasized: “Since 1956 (popular uprising in Hungary, which was bloodily crushed by Soviet tanks – note) we have known what it means when the Kremlin interferes in the internal affairs of a free country Ukraine is living through 2022, even bloodier, with even more innocent victims”.
