The Viennese SPÖ can hold its traditional rally on May 1st this year in full attendance. But the ÖVP also reported on “Labor Day” with a political message: “Those who go to work every day must be able to afford property,” said General Secretary Laura Sachslehner and promptly criticized the municipal building model proudly held up by the Vienna Reds.

“While the federal government has anchored measures to promote home ownership in the government program, there are no efforts in red Vienna to increase the proportion of owner-occupied housing,” said Sachslehner. Rather, the municipal building model of the City of Vienna aims to keep the Viennese in rental contracts without the possibility of ever acquiring the inhabited property. With the help of non-profit property developers, the city must instead offer more subsidized property and establish rent-purchase options in municipal housing.

Probably undeterred by this, the Social Democrats migrate from their home districts to the Rathausplatz on “Labour Day”, where they can then listen to speeches by Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner, among others.

The FPÖ is also returning to its now traditional May Day program. Upper Austria’s provincial chairman Manfred Haimbuchner invites interested parties such as federal party leader Herbert Kickl to a beer tent at Urfahraner Markt in Linz. The NEOS, in turn, invite you to a press conference in Vienna with City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr and spokeswoman for education Martina Künsberg Sarre.
