Because the German car manufacturer Audi is now working with two partner companies (Saint-Gobain Glass and Reiling Glas Recycling) to be able to recycle car glass in the future. The aim is to use this to create new panes of glass that can then be reinstalled in electric models such as the Audi Q4 e-tron.
In the pilot project that has now started and is scheduled to last a year, broken panes of glass will be collected from selected German car dealers and shredded. Then all non-glass substances (adhesives, etc.) are sorted out. The glass granulate obtained in this way is melted down and processed into new flat glass. In this way, energy and raw materials such as quartz sand can be saved.
Up to 30 percent less CO2 emissions
“Our goal is to use secondary material wherever it is technically possible and makes economic sense. We are working on using materials that we have direct access to in closed cycles,” says Marco Philippi, Head of Audi Procurement Strategy. to the pilot project.
Philippi names two other advantages of recycled glass: the quality of the high-quality car glass is retained and CO2 can be saved. According to Audi, up to 30 percent less carbon dioxide is emitted during reprocessing compared to the production of new glass.
