Russia celebrates Victory Day on May 9, commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory over Germany in World War II, which occurred on that date in 1945.
Lavrov noted that the duration of the invasion of Ukraine depends “on the need to minimize any risk to the civilian population and Russian military personnel.”
He also assured that Moscow “never stopped striving to reach agreements that guarantee that a nuclear war does not occur.”
Meanwhile, he accused Ukraine of trying to hide the presence of alleged Western mercenaries in the Mariupol evacuation operation.
“The persistent and even hysterical desire of (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky, his team and their Western sponsors to get all these people out and send them to the (controlled by) territory of Ukraine is explained by the fact that many characters would confirm the presence of mercenaries, or perhaps active officers of the Western armies on the side of the Ukrainian radicals”, Held.
Earlier today, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that 80 civilians – including women and children – had been rescued from the Asovstal steel plant in Mariupol, allegedly being held hostage by Ukrainian nationalists.
On the other hand, Lavrov said that in Ukraine there is no representative of the Wagner “private military company” and assured that it has no relationship with the Russian government.
Wagner is a company of Russian origin, generally described as a “private military company” -although also, according to some sources, as a “secret squad” of the Russian armed forces-, which is supposed to operate in several regions, mainly in the east of Ukraine and in Syria.
“In Ukraine there is nothing like that, there are only a large number of mercenaries from Western countries,” Lavrov said.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zajarova said last Thursday that since the beginning of the invasion some 7,000 mercenaries from more than 60 countries had been in Ukraine.
