65 percent of the subjects in whom remains of the coronavirus were found in their intestines suffered from long-Covid symptoms such as tiredness and exhaustion. Patients who no longer had any residual virus in their intestines did not suffer from Long Covid either.
Specifically, gastrointestinal endoscopies were performed in 46 patients with chronic intestinal diseases. 90 percent of them had had a mild course of the corona virus. According to the study authors, this is another indicator that the severity of the course of the original corona disease does not necessarily indicate whether long-Covid symptoms occur.
In around 70 percent, virus residues were still found in the mucous membrane of the small or large intestine after seven months. This could be an indication that the body is having trouble getting rid of these residues for good.
