Since taking office almost two years ago, Steyr’s city archivist Doris Hörmann has been confronted with sometimes labour-intensive official and transport routes.
Since the city archive is bursting at the seams, books and series of publications from the museum have migrated to her and mountains of files from the late 19th and early 20th centuries have come into her care, she is more than challenged. In particular, the relocation of library material to the study library, which is currently being set up in Zwischenbrücken, quickly revealed the limits of inner-city transport by car.
As an ambitious cyclist – Doris Hörmann drives daily from St. Ulrich to her workplace on the town square – she has made a virtue out of necessity. In consultation with the board of the “Friends of History” association, a transport trailer for her bicycle was purchased for 600 euros. “On the way for the city archives” is written on the back and now, after a short time, Doris Hörmann is already being referred to as Steyr’s “cycling archivist”.
At the moment, her main routes are purely within the city: she visits the museum a few times a month, but most of the time she goes to the new library in Zwischenbrücken. In the last month alone, Doris Hörmann transported more than a ton of books.
When asked whether this performance can be bettered, the answer comes surprisingly spontaneously: “My next goal is to try to get my bike and trailer to the external depot at the municipal works via the Tabor lift. If it works, you will see me there more often .” (loc)
