Lula and Bolsonaro measured forces in massive acts before the campaign

“Greet those who are here in the peaceful demonstration in defense of the Constitution, democracy and freedom. Congratulations to all,” Bolsonaro said, in a live broadcast on social media that accompanied his walk. After closely greeting the protesters, the president left without offering a speech, unlike other acts. Later, virtually, he greeted supporters who gathered on Paulista Avenue in Sao Paulo.

The far-right president is leading an escalation of tension with the Supreme Federal Court (STF), after last week he decided to pardon the allied deputy Daniel Silveira one day after the highest court sentenced him to more than 8 years in prison for promoting undemocratic acts.

The official acts, which were also replicated in Rio de Janeiro, in addition to showing support for the president and Silveira, carried slogans with attacks on the Court.

Silveira, favored by forgiveness, participated and spoke at the event in Rio de Janeiro, in front of Copacabana beach. “Supreme is the people. Enough with the dictatorship of the STF”, read one of the posters in Copacabana.

Luciana Gomes Ribeiro, a 47-year-old driver demonstrating in Rio, said she was there because she is confident that Bolsonaro “is going to improve a lot” the country. “He will easily be re-elected (in October) if there is no fraud in the vote count,” said Ribeiro.

In addition to upsetting the STF by pardoning Silveira, Bolsonaro has reinforced attacks on the electoral court in recent days, sowing doubts about the reliability of the electronic ballot box system, without offering evidence of the supposed vulnerability.

For his part, former leftist president Lula da Silva participated in a Labor Day event organized by trade unions in São Paulo.

Lula criticized inflation -which accumulates 12.03% in 12 months- and defended that during his administration (2003-2010) the salary grew above it.

“Someone better than that president (Bolsonaro) is going to win the elections,” Lula said in his speech at Charles Miller Square, in Sao Paulo, during the event organized by seven trade union centrals. “We have to make an immeasurable fight so that we can reduce inflation and transform what is inflation into a wage increase so that people can eat and live better,” he said, according to the G1 news portal.

Lula apologized for saying on Saturday that “Bolsonaro only likes the police.” “I wanted to say that Bolsonaro only likes the military, he doesn’t like the people, and I said he only likes the police, he doesn’t like the people,” she explained.

“I want to take this opportunity and apologize to the police, because many times they make mistakes but many times they save many working people and we have to treat them as workers,” Lula added.

According to polls, Lula is the favorite for the election on October 2, despite the fact that he would not avoid a second round with Bolsonaro, who has cut the lead in recent polls.
