Austrians will spend an average of 73 euros on gifts, according to a joint survey by the trade association and the market research institute Mindtake Research. That is eleven euros more than in the previous year.
The most concerned are the classics: flowers/plants (33 percent) and chocolate/pralines/sweets (15 percent). However, non-material gifts/excursions (twelve percent), restaurant visits (nine percent) and vouchers (eight percent) are also very popular, according to a broadcast on Friday.
In a comparison of the federal states, there is a difference in terms of generosity: while the planned per capita expenditure in Upper Austria and Salzburg amount to 117 euros, can be found in Lower Austria and the Burgenland with 50 euros the most economical donors. In between are the federal states Styria and Carinthia with 57 euros, Vienna with 58 euros as well Tyrol and Vorarlberg with 81 euros.
“This year, Austrians are spending a total of around 240 million euros on Mother’s Day gifts. This means that Mother’s Day is an important sales driver, especially for the food and flower trade, but also for drugstores, perfumeries and jewelry retailers, which is currently in the crisis like a bite of bread is needed. Next to Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day is actually the day of the year with the highest sales for the flower trade,” said Rainer Will, Managing Director of the trade association.
