The prosecution opens an investigation into the threats against Gustavo Petro

“The team of prosecutors and investigators of the Thematic Axis of Threats against Human Rights Defenders and Social Leaders, which took on the case, contacted those in charge of Mr. Petro Urrego’s security and the people from his campaign to obtain details about the origin of the known information and guide the investigations,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

The presidential candidate’s campaign announced the day before that it was postponing a tour of several cities and the population of the departments that make up Colombia’s coffee growing axis upon receiving “information that could put the candidate’s integrity at risk.”

Based on data collected by its “security team” the campaign would have information that a far-right organization linked to crime, particularly drug trafficking, would be behind the alleged plan to attack Gustavo Petro, a former guerrilla favorite for the presidential elections according to polls.

Both the right-wing government of Ivan Duke and the police denied having information about the alleged plan to attack the candidate.

“The National Police, so far, does not have any intelligence information or information related to judicial processes that allows inferring the existence of a criminal plan against the candidate of the Historical Pact movement,” said that institution.
