For many it is the subject of fear par excellence, others praise it as the “supreme discipline”: 46,000 high school graduates had to face the written matriculation examination in mathematics on Tuesday. The examination paper for the AHS high school graduates comprised 36 pages, 28 tasks had to be solved: from the weight development of a baby to the water level in the garden pond to the vitamin C content of broccoli. Could you have solved the questions? You can download the tasks and solutions here:

As in the past two school years, the Matura took place this year with some simplifications due to the pandemic: Reduced subject matter, one hour more working time and a new grading system are intended to make the final exam a little easier for the high school graduates.
Video: The written Central Matura exams are currently taking place in Austria. There will also be oral exams again in a few weeks, which was hotly debated. Educational psychologist Christiane Spiel spoke on ORF about the central Matura in Austria and the debates about the changes caused by the pandemic.

A day to relax
After the Central Matura with the subjects Greek and Latin started on Monday, the students now have a day to relax. German will follow on May 5th, English on May 6th, French on May 10th, Spanish and the minority languages on May 11th and Italian on May 12th. In between, on May 9th, those subjects will be tested in which the tasks are not specified by the Ministry of Education. A negative corona test is required on each day of the exam to take part – with the exception of those people who have had an infection in the last 60 days. A mask must be worn during the Matura not to be worn.
Criticism from the ÖH
The Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) has meanwhile sent a message from Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP). Matura demanded “those who actually prepare for a course of study”. With first-year students and in teacher training, one notices that the school system is currently “designed purely for performance, not for personal development and deepening of one’s own interests,” complains Katharina Stern, officer for educational affairs at the ÖH. Polaschek should revise the school system and convert it into a learning and examination culture of the 21st century. To address any gaps in knowledge between Matura and to close the start of studies, free and barrier-free remedial courses are also needed.
