The European Union defines the embargo on Russian oil, but with exceptions

The executive arm of the EU, the European Comissionhas already put the finishing touches on its sixth package of sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraineand the proposal begins the definition phase before being announced.

The package foresees a gradual cessation of European purchases of Russian oil in a period of 6 to 8 months, but with the exception of Hungary and Slovakia, two countries totally dependent on Russian crude through the Druzhba pipeline.

Those two countries could continue their oil purchases from Russia until 2023, according to a European official.

“The whole substitution process [del petróleo proveniente de Rusia] It will take several years, and for this reason I will insist on the exemption,” the Slovakian Minister of Economy, Richard Sulik, told the press in his country.

The European Union’s measure is not without controversy, since Bulgaria and the Czech Republic they also want to benefit from an exemption similar to the one negotiated for Hungary and Slovakia, according to diplomats close to the negotiations.

“We must avoid the contagion effect, [porque] everyone will want repeals. We will have to find adequate solutions,” confided a European official.

The College of European Commissioners should still seal the proposal this Tuesday at a meeting on the sidelines of the plenary session of the European Parliament, in Strasbourg.

Next, the package will be distributed to the ambassadors of the countries of the European Union, to begin the analysis in the capitals.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, plans to deliver a speech on Wednesday before the Eurolegislators, but is not expected to make reference to these negotiations, sources consulted agreed.
