“The order was given [el 21 de abril] publicly by the commander in chief [el presidente Vladímir Putin] to nullify any assault. There is no assault” at the moment, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said.
He also explained that Russian troops surround the place and they only intervene to “quickly cut off attempts” by Ukrainian fighters to get to “firing positions”.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian authorities said Russian forces were carrying out a “powerful attack” on Azovstal, with tanks and infantry.
The Russian Defense Ministry had only announced air and artillery strikes to “destroy Ukrainian firing positions”.
Russia, which has been carrying out a military offensive in Ukraine since February 24, controls much of Mariupol.
After weeks of siege, the city is largely devastated. But the last Ukrainian defenders are holding out in the vast network of underground galleries of the Azovstal steelworks, difficult to assault or destroy by bombing.
