The political control debate was scheduled to take place last week, but was postponed precisely because Defense Minister He had to attend another debate on a motion of censure – which will be voted on Wednesday – against him for the same facts.
As the newspaper El Espectador recalled, on April 26, an extensive debate was held in Congress to discuss the irregularities of the military operation in Putumayo, which ended with civilian deaths, recalling the scandal of “false positives” during the armed conflict in Colombia.
Representatives of the opposition, victims and members of the government caucus took part in that debate.
In the Putumayo massacre, at least eleven people died, including a minor and a pregnant woman, as a result of this operation carried out in the village of Remanso, in Puerto Leguízamo. According to the Army, the victims were part of the 48th Front, one of the dissidences of the disappeared guerrilla of the FARC.
Days later, the Attorney General’s Office demanded an accurate report from the Army on what had happened, after local organizations denounced that the victims were not alleged dissidents or guerrillas but merely “members of the community.”
So, there were inconsistencies in the officers’ statements and a network of media began an investigation into what happened, which supports the version of the peasant and indigenous organizations.
Colombia is currently experiencing an upswing in violence due to clashes between criminal groups and dissidents from the demobilized guerrillas, who are fighting over drug trafficking routes.
In addition, last week the hearings began, within the framework of the special justice for peace, precisely for the murders of civilians committed during the armed conflict. Several soldiers admitted to having killed civilians and passing them off as guerrillas to show the results of the government’s offensive against the insurgents.
