Her two grandchildren impatiently pull Gertrude Koll in the direction of the rides. “They live in the Innviertel. Today I’m doing a Linz day with them, so of course the Urfahraner Markt can’t be missed,” says the Linz native. “The ghost train pulls the most, they really want to go there,” says Koll.
Like them, many families used the school-free state holiday yesterday to visit the Urfahrmarkt. Coincidentally, the holiday coincided with Family Day, which traditionally takes place on Wednesday. Showmen, market drivers and restaurateurs offered a variety of special offers for this occasion.

Fighting at the fire brigade
Not only families plunged into the hustle and bustle of the market. A large number of young people were also looking for a thrill in the rides – for example fourteen-year-old Lea with her friends. “We prefer to drive with the wild things. We’ve just been to the chaos, that was pretty cool,” says the teenager with reddened cheeks.
On the day of honor of St. Florian, who is not only the patron saint of the country, but also the patron saint of the fire brigades, the St. Magdalena volunteer fire brigade has come up with a special attraction. It was extinguished in a race, so to speak: the children could spray a hole in a target wall with the hose. If they were accurate and enough water landed in the hole, a figure rose above the target wall to honor the achievement of the junior firefighters. And in a fire engine they could experience what it’s like to ride in the back of the crew compartment.
The stand was looked after by the youth group of the FF St. Magdalena. Xaver Garstenauer has been with us for a year. “I always wanted to join the fire department, it’s really good for me,” says the 10-year-old. His big brother Jakob is the youth worker in St. Magdalena, he was there yesterday with his troupe. “We want to show that there is a voluntary fire brigade in Linz in addition to the professional fire brigade and that we are happy about every newcomer among young people,” says Garstenauer.
