The Wizard of TikTok

The Wizard of TikTok

Think of it like this: He’s standing in the last of the 75,000 occupied seats in Munich’s Allianz Arena and shows a card trick. Then it’s time to change places for 75,000 spectators, the next ones are coming. And the whole thing is repeated ten times. So many and more people are watching Umut Dasar’s (magic trick) videos on TikTok. “I really had to realize that at the beginning,” says the 21-year-old Simbacher. Since he was 14, he has been producing videos, dealing with editing programs and pictures. He first became active on TikTok in 2020. There he uploaded a video of himself and it went viral. Since then, the young Simbacher with Turkish roots has been the owner of the fastest growing TikTok account in Germany. “In 30 days I managed 600,000 subscribers,” he says proudly. And that with a hobby that he taught himself at the age of ten.

There are downsides too

Yes, he is proud of this success, but he certainly won’t let it get to his head. “There are not only advantages, you also have to be able to live with the disadvantages,” he says, naming a normal life in his hometown of Simbach and in Braunau that is hardly possible anymore. Photos are taken of him secretly, his privacy is not respected. You have to learn to deal with that. At some point, being constantly online on social media became too much for him. “You reach that one limit and you realize it’s not fun anymore. Now I consciously take breaks,” he says.

He used to upload two to three videos a day, now it’s that many in a week. “Many do not see that there is often a lot of work behind these videos. For some it took me five to six hours,” he points out. About 20 seconds of this is broadcast. But it is precisely these who decide how many see the video. “But I always do what I enjoy. I don’t force anything, I don’t want that,” he draws a strict line. He always has to feel good about himself and not only wants to produce for clicks and likes, but also scores with creative ideas. For a long time now, this has not only included “close-up magic”, which requires a lot of dexterity, but now also fashion and much more. “But I always want to stay true to myself,” he says. Because much of what goes well online, he cannot reconcile with himself and his conscience. “I know that many young people follow me, I want to be a role model,” he says.

Of course, he has long been making money with his TikTok account. His management in Berlin keeps an eye on the cooperation. At the same time, Umut is currently completing a federal voluntary service and helping out at the Red Cross. “It’s valuable work, I know in the evening that I’ve done something good,” he says happily. He wants to gain a foothold in the media industry. “Of course I want to play to my strengths and experience in filming and editing,” he says.
