The rescue service said it was two men aged 21 and 27 who were doing work in the building.
Another 18 people suffered injuries from flying glass splinters and debris. One of the injured is in mortal danger after falling into the courtyard of the four-storey house, the newspaper “La Vanguardia” reported.
The building in the posh district of Salamanca was badly damaged and the top floor apartment was almost completely destroyed, as could be seen on television pictures. Many parked cars were also demolished. A gas leak was thought to be the probable cause of the explosion. Four people died in a gas explosion in a building in central Madrid in January last year.
