the government closed a US mining company for environmental damage

The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) said that after an inspection visit to a property belonging to the company Calizas Industriales del Carmen, a subsidiary of Vulcan Materials, it was decided to temporarily close its activities.

“The existence of probable damage and serious deterioration to the ecosystems was warned,” the entity said in a statement.

He added that the extraction of the material has caused impacts such as “the definitive and irrecoverable loss of the subsoilalteration of the pressure of the aquifer, risk of subsidence and fractures of the subsoil”.

The measure was executed after last Monday the president of Mexico, the leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced that his government would take legal action against the company.

López Obrador maintained that although the company had reported that it was no longer extracting material, in a recent overflight he noticed that they were still working in the area and even loading a ship in Carmen beach.

“It is daring to make fun of the authorities of our country,” he said.

The US mining company described this Friday the action of the Mexican government as “illegal” and assured that “it has the necessary permits to operate.”

In a statement addressed to its investors, it added that “intends to pursue all legal options to protect their rights and resume normal operations.

The mining company has been operating its “largest quarry” near Playa del Carmen since 1986, where it obtains the raw material to produce aggregates for concrete and asphalt, bases, rocks and stone dust, according to data from the company itself.

The Mexican government maintains a tense relationship with the Joe Biden administration precisely because of the interests of US companies in Mexico. The most critical point was the warnings of legal action if López Obrador’s electrical reform went ahead, which ultimately failed to pass the legislative process.
