Congress rejected Pedro Castillo’s constitutional reform project

The Government had the objective of installing a constituent assembly to draft and change the Constitution in force since 1993, favorable to a free market economywritten during the term of President Alberto Fujimori, who is now in prison accused of human rights violations and corruption.

Ever since Pedro Castillo campaigned on his reform promise and surprisingly won the election by a narrow margin, investors and right-wing politicians have been concerned about a possible change to the current constitution, an aspiration of the Peruvian left for a long time.

The defenders of the current Constitution affirm that with it Peru registered one of the greatest economic growths in the last two decades, but its detractors say that, despite the fact that poverty has been reduced, inequality has increased due to a poor distribution of income. wealth.

Peru is the world’s second largest producer of copper.

Pedro Castillo had presented his reform project after having survived two attempts to remove him from office by Congress, with four cabinets of ministers, social protests and constant political instability since he took office.

According to a survey by the Ipsos Peru firm released at the end of April, only 7% of Peruvians agreed with promoting a constituent assembly. Meanwhile, 43% stated that the government’s priority should be the fight against crime and another 42% the fight against corruption.
