Best nothing new, thought the weather gods at the beginning of May and continued to endure the whims of April. The first strong thunderstorms, which at least visually turned the roads of the western autobahn into a snowy road, also fell over Upper Austria. The spontaneous mixture of sun, dense clouds and heavy rain showers, which required a lot of planning for an excursion, will last until Mother’s Day. But summer brings its strongest force into play already on Sunday: the sun will break through the thick cloud cover and won’t leave mothers out in the rain.

“Nearly the 30 degree mark”
Today’s Saturday is again a gamble in terms of weather: “The clouds dominate, in between there are always loosening up. It’s not a day on which it rains, but rain showers can be planned for at any time,” says Yasmin Markl, meteorologist at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). The temperatures reach a maximum of 19 degrees.
There’s “some sunshine” between the clouds on Mother’s Day. However, the air remains unstable, so a short rain shower cannot be ruled out. “Overall, however, there is excursion weather. The friendly weather character dominates,” says Markl.
New week, new weather? Not quite. Monday is relatively similar, overall it is very friendly, even if “more and more cumulus clouds” appear in the afternoon. Noteworthy rain showers are only to be expected in the mountains in the afternoon. From Tuesday, a high pressure area will approach from the west, temperatures will rise to up to 26 degrees. “It will be very friendly, very sunny and the cumulus clouds that form remain harmless. There are almost no rain showers,” says Markl.
A premiere follows on Wednesday: the first stable summer day of the year is coming up in Upper Austria. “The 30 degrees will just not go out,” says the meteorologist. Summer doesn’t need to be asked twice on Thursday either: It stays very warm and friendly with up to 27 degrees.
“According to current forecasts, however, a fault zone is announced on Friday that could turn the weather upside down again,” says Markl. But this is not guaranteed, so the hope of a first summer weekend is not in vain.
Relocation of the ZAMG to the fire brigade command
In order to improve communication between the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) and the State Fire Brigade Command (LFK), the two institutions are literally moving closer together. A branch office of the ZAMG has now been set up on the premises of the LFK in Linz. “In the past few years we have seen how important good and rapid cooperation is in view of the increasing number of extreme weather events,” says State Fire Brigade Commander Robert Mayer.
Better communication should be possible in the event of weather catastrophes, but also during preparation. “It is also very important that you get to know and understand each other through the greater proximity and thus know what the common basis for discussion is in an emergency,” says meteorologist Alexander Ohms, who will occupy the office.
“I am pleased that this long-standing partnership has also been able to manifest itself spatially here,” says Maximilian Hiegelsberger (VP), President of the State Parliament.
