The 1964 “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” screenprint, based on a photograph and showing the actress in front of a turquoise-blue background with yellow hair, red lips and turquoise eye shadow, is scheduled to be auctioned in New York on Monday from 7 p.m. said the auction house.

The picture comes from the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation in Zurich, which intends to use all proceeds from the auction for charitable purposes. The picture is said to be one of Warhol’s most famous works. According to Christie’s, it could become the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction in the 20th century.

Ammann acquired the Monroe painting in the early 1980s. The purchase price at that time is unknown. The work is considered the pinnacle of American pop. It is part of a series of four works by the artist Warhol showing the portrait of Marilyn Monroe in different colors.

Altogether, several dozen masterpieces from the 20th century from the Zürichberg collection will go under the hammer at the auction. This was created by the art dealer siblings Thomas and Doris Ammann. On numerous international trips, including to New York, he made contact with artists and acquired works from them. One of them was Andy Warhol.

Born in Thurgau, Thomas Ammann died in 1993 at the age of 43. His sister Doris continued the collection. When she died in 2021, the 76-year-old decreed that the collection should be sold quickly. The siblings were childless. The proceeds from the auction will benefit a foundation and thus improve the lives of children around the world.
