More trees are to cool the town square

The greening of the Vöcklabruck town square is progressing. On the advice of experts, the municipality relies on Gleditschias, which are considered climate trees: They tolerate heat and drought and are also bee-friendly. The first six trees were donated to the municipality by the non-profit settlement company Lenzing. An innovative irrigation system ensures that the water reaches the roots directly, thereby drastically reducing water consumption.

“It is absolutely important to green our center,” says Mayor Peter Schobesberger (SPÖ). “Trees provide shade, reduce air pollution and help against extreme heat through their evaporation effect.” If Schobesberger has his way, greening should be further promoted. In the densely built-up inner-city area, further areas are currently being examined accordingly. “Unfortunately, we have to be prepared for more hot days and take precautions to cushion the consequences,” says the mayor.
