Booster vaccination: The fourth stitch for nursing home residents

With the fourth stitch, the National Vaccination Panel recommends a Covid booster shot for people aged 80 and over. In coordination with the general practitioners, the crisis management team and the state health department, the social department is organizing the booster vaccinations in the old people’s and nursing homes, says state social counselor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP). At around 90 percent, the vaccination rate in the homes has been very high in recent months. “We want to keep this status to protect the residents,” says the Social Councilor.

“The personal risk of a serious illness is greatly reduced by the vaccination, and the risk of transmission to others is also moderately reduced,” says doctor Bernd Lamprecht, head of the University Clinic for Pulmonary Medicine. Due to the high vaccination rates, the rate of infection was relatively low.

This is also shown by the numbers: At the peak of the corona wave in November 2020, 13,334 active cases and 653 infected residents were counted in Upper Austria. In March 2022 there were 66,219 active cases, but only 858 infected residents.
