Police prevented father from jumping from the 13th floor with a small child

Dramatic scenes took place in a high-rise building in Innsbruck over the weekend. Police were just able to prevent a 40-year-old from Afghanistan from jumping out of a 13th-floor window with his young daughter in his arms. Luckily the toddler was unharmed.

It was late Friday evening when the 38-year-old wife called the police and said she was being abused and beaten by her husband. Officers from the Innsbruck-Pradl police station came immediately to check.

According to the provisions of the Security Police Act, the 40-year-old Afghan should be expelled from the apartment and a temporary ban on approaching should be issued.

Suddenly the Afghan grabbed his two-year-old daughter, opened a window and tried to throw himself from the 13th floor with the toddler in his arms. But the officials reacted with quick-wittedness and were able to snatch the child from the Afghan and bring it to safety. A spokeswoman for the Tyrolean state police announced that it was doing well. When he was arrested, the 40-year-old resisted so fiercely that he injured two more police officers who suffered bruises. The Afghan was first taken into police custody and later taken to Innsbruck Prison. He was questioned by homicide detectives, but made no confession, it said.

Knife attack in Meidling

Investigators from the Vienna State Criminal Police Office have also been on duty since Sunday morning after a 39-year-old man was stabbed by an initially unknown perpetrator at Meidlinger Markt: completely unexpectedly and for no apparent reason. The suspect acted “arbitrarily,” said police spokeswoman Barbara Gass.

The police were finally able to arrest a 34-year-old at the scene. According to reports, there are indications of a mental illness – possibly a psychosis. The victim suffered stab wounds to her arms and legs and had to be taken to a hospital for treatment.
