Rapid separates from Schobesberger with a heavy heart

The “winged freak” from Linz came to Rapid from Pasching in 2014, where he quickly became a regular and even made it to the ÖFB team player (a country match in 2017 with a 1-0 win in Moldova). In recent years, the 28-year-old has repeatedly struggled with serious injuries.

Schobesberger completed 164 competitive games for Rapid and scored 31 goals. The current sporting director, Zoran Barisic, spoke out in favor of a commitment from Schobesberger eight years ago as the Rapid coach at the time, so the farewell hurts all the more. “It wasn’t easy for me and any of us, but the decision was made,” said Barisic. Schobesberger said of his upcoming departure: “Eight years is a very long time in a footballer’s career. I’m grateful that I was able to experience it at Rapid. They were basically good years, even if the phases around the injuries were tough.”

From the WAC to Klagenfurt

Christopher Wernitznig is moving from Wolfsberger AC to Austria Klagenfurt in the summer. The midfielder has signed a two-year contract with an option for a further season. Wernitznig comes on a free transfer, especially since his contract with the Wolfsbergers expires at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has been on the ball with the Lavanttalers since 2014, with 326 appearances and 36 goals in the upper house. “I would like to help achieve Austria’s goals in the coming years,” said Wernitznig.
