Landes-Kultur-GmbH is launching a new performance festival. Under the motto “The Non-Fungible Body?” From June 17th to 19th, 20 artists will be guests at the OK Linz and in the music theater. The festival came about at the suggestion of the employees, said Kultur-GmbH boss Alfred Weidinger yesterday at the presentation: “We have already reserved a date for next year.”
The festival is dedicated to current trends in performance art. This year the focus is on the question of how performative art can find expression on the Internet. “The language of performance is fleeting and elusive,” said Freda Fiala. The Viennese curated the festival together with the Paris-based Taiwanese performance artist River Lin.
“Taking this art form seriously”
On June 18, Xavier Le Roy is showing his style-defining work “Product of Circumstances” at the Musiktheater, which he has performed since 1999 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. Also on June 18 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sara Lanner will barter with the audience in her performance “Caught in the Blockchain” at the OK: personal objects for so-called tokens, in her case a desired performance: “It symbolizes the question of how to translate intimate moments between audience and performer into digital space,” she said.
But why is Landes-Kultur-GmbH organizing such a festival? “Every museum that deals with contemporary art today includes the theme of performance,” said Weidinger. This is mostly at openings or events. “We want to take this art form more seriously.”
But does the Kultur-GmbH, which specializes in exhibitions, have the skills to do so? “Yes,” says Weidinger, referring to the cooperation with the music theater, “there are people here in Linz who are very familiar with it.” The festival budget totals 62,000 euros.
