Preliminary information released by Colombian media indicates that the crime was perpetrated by two people who they approached the prosecutor on a jet ski and opened fire from there.
Pecci was transferred to a health center, but arrived lifeless.
The prosecutor had traveled to Cartagena with his wife, Claudia Aguilera, whom he married on April 30. Hours earlier, the woman had announced on social networks that the couple was expecting her first child, according to the Paraguayan newspaper ABC Color.
The Paraguayan Foreign Ministry reported that it asked its ambassador to contact the prosecutor’s wife and the Colombian authorities in order to gather as much information as possible. Consul Romy Romero is already on her way to Cartagena to closely follow the investigations.
“The urgent, rapid decision has been made to send five officials from the homicide team,” Colombian police director Jorge Luis Vargas added in a statement sent to the press.
Vargas added that a “commission of officers” from Paraguay will arrive in Colombia to join the investigation team and that the investigations will be supported by US authorities.
The president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benitezreacted on the same social network: “the cowardly murder of prosecutor Marcelo Pecci in Colombia mourns the entire Paraguayan nation. We condemn this tragic event in the strongest terms and redouble our commitment to fight against organized crime.”
