Confirm 42 deaths from the Saratoga Hotel explosion

On Friday, the luxurious Hotel Saratoga, located in a busy Paseo del Prado in Old Havanaexploded around noon when it was refueled gas. The emblematic five-star hotel was closed for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic and was preparing to reopen to the publicbut its first four floors turned out destroyed.

Roberto Enrique Calzadilladelegate of the state company Gaviota and current owner of the hotel, stated at a press conference that at the time of the explosion there was 51 workers in the building. And that preliminary studies indicate that the architecture of the hotel had “an affectation of 80%”.

Along the same line, of the total number of employees, they recovered 23 bodies, three survivors remain hospitalized and 22 were dischargedwhile two waitresses and a cook continue disappeared.

Tourism is the main economic activity in Cuba and was hit hard by the pandemic. Questioned by the press, Carmen Casalsspokesman for the Ministry of Tourism, ruled out that the accident was going to harm the tourist image of the island. “I think that the image of Cuba will continue to be a destination of peace, tranquility, security and solidarity”he concluded.
