Many cooks spoil the broth – with the non-fiction book “Das Tote Gebirge” presented yesterday in Linz, that can safely be ruled out. Rather, the almost 300-page work proves to be a treasure trove in which nature, culture and people play a role, but in which historical, visionary and legendary things also find their place.
Experts such as the Kalkalpen National Park initiators Willibald Girkinger and Franz Sieghartsleitner and Lutz Maurer, the long-time “Land der Berge” designer, are responsible for the content, all of whom act as publishers. They wrote articles in the book published by Trauner Verlag, as did people who know the mountain world – above all actor Klaus Maria Brandauer, singer Hubert von Goisern or Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. The extreme mountaineer associates her first alpine experiences with the Dead Mountains, at the same time she appreciates the many “untouched places” as a retreat to switch off. Her favorite flower, the lady’s slipper, can also only be found here, the professional mountaineer explained at the book presentation.
For Franz Sieghartsleitner, the Dead Mountains are a natural area “full of superlatives”, which unites in its area both the largest untouched larch pine forests in Eastern Europe and the largest karst desert in Central Europe. With 2500 shafts and caves, it is also the mountain group with the most caves in Europe. The Dead Mountains fascinate with their contrasts and their originality. According to Sieghartsleitner, this “wilderness on the doorstep” must be preserved and protected.
