What could be nicer than creating something together and thereby developing a feeling of togetherness,” enthuses Barbara Primetshofer from Linz. The office worker finds the perfect opportunity to do just that in one of the Morgentau gardens, that of Demeter builder Christian Stadler has been operating in several cities in Upper Austria and in Graz since 2015. “Here on the Bindermichl we grow organic vegetables together with friends on our 60 square meter plot, take care of them throughout the season and will distribute them fairly among us after the harvest or at cooking evenings together process and enjoy – that brings us together,” adds her husband Ludwig Primetshofer.
“The carrots are a dream”
The couple’s two children, Lena (13) and Leon (11), are also there with a lot of enthusiasm and zest for action. “We have planted a lot of vegetables and are already looking forward to harvesting the first carrots,” says Leon. Freshly pulled out of the ground and washed, these would taste best of all types of vegetables by far. Filip, a friend of the children, can only confirm that: “They are a dream.”
From the point of view of the hobby gardener, cultivating the plot together has several advantages. “Because we take turns weeding and tending our vegetables, nobody has a lot of work to do, and going on vacation isn’t a problem because there’s always someone who can take care of the garden,” says Barbara Primetshofer.
The two sisters-in-law Elisabeth and Monika Hoheneder are also enthusiastic Morgentau organic gardeners. “I’ve been there since 2015 and harvest around 200 kilograms of organic vegetables every year on my 40 square meter plot,” says retired kindergarten teacher Elisabeth Hoheneder. That’s more than she and her family could eat. “Two years ago, for example, we had so many tomatoes that I made ketchup out of them, which we then looked forward to next season,” says the 60-year-old. And because the samples were so well received by her friends, she has often passed on the recipe for them. It was similar with the large amounts of cabbage that she harvested in a good vegetable year. “So that we didn’t have to throw anything away, we made Russian herb with friends,” says Hoheneder. It was great fun and many people were supplied with the pickled herb throughout the winter.
Elisabeth Hoheneder also infected her sister-in-law Monika with her enthusiasm. “I think it’s great that you only have to weed and loosen the soil once a week and the plants hardly have to be watered,” says Monika Hoheneder. As a child from the country, she really enjoys being able to harvest her own vegetables of the best organic quality in the middle of the city.
This is also the case for pensioner Franz Briendl (70), who has had a plot in the Morgentau Garden on Bindermichl for four years. “I discovered the system while jogging and was immediately impressed.” Although he gives most of it away, Briendl doesn’t want to do without his easy-care organic garden.
