Steyr is dedicated to gays, lesbians and diverse

Since yesterday, the zebra crossing that leads from the steps to the Ennssteg in the direction of the train station on Dukartstraße has been lit up in the colors of the rainbow. It is the start of a series of campaigns and events initiated by City Councilor Katrin Auer (SP), who is also responsible for equal treatment: In June 2022, the city of Steyr will be devoting itself to LGBTQIA+ concerns for the first time.

In contrast to other comparable cities, Steyr does not yet have an open gay and lesbian scene. “That’s always been a mystery to me,” says Auer, “so I was all the more surprised at how broadly I met my idea.” The aim is to pay more attention to this topic.

In the Pride month of June, Steyr will be decorated with all kinds of rainbows: two colorful park benches will be set up on the town square, the town hall will shine in rainbow colors, flower beds will be designed and there will be several queer events and “diversity picnics”.

The first event is a movie night on May 25th in the casino hall. The film “Pride” is shown, which is based on real events: a gay and lesbian troupe from London meets striking Welsh miners.

In June, guest toasters from special diversity programs will be brought in at the “Das Kleine Schwarze” café, the playlists in the restaurant will be inspired by the scene and the Pride flag will be hoisted. From June 6th to June 12th, Buburuza will also be offering Rainbow Ice Cream while supplies last. Citypastoral and Regenbogenpastoral Steyr invite queer and non-queer people to a joint celebration followed by agape on June 22 at 7 p.m. on the FH roof terrace. The final highlight is the first Pride Parade in Steyr on Saturday, July 2, from 2 p.m. It starts at 2 p.m. at the Arbeitswelt Museum and will lead back to the museum via the FH, Schlosspark and Stadtplatz. “There will only be speeches by those affected who report on their experiences,” says Auer. The conclusion is a concert by the band Bipolar Feminin in Röda. Demo signs will be painted for the parade on June 17th in the vault youth center and on July 1st in the Röda cultural association.
