Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan announced on Wednesday that he would set up alternative quarters. “We don’t let people sleep in the corridors,” wrote the conservative politician on Twitter.
The fire brigade was commissioned to set up a tent camp for around 150 people in the Troja district because all available accommodation capacities have been exhausted. Non-governmental organizations should also be involved.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, more than 337,000 people from Ukraine have found refuge and received residence permits in the Czech Republic. The government has now announced more precise checks on those seeking protection. For example, people who have Ukrainian and Hungarian citizenship should no longer receive social benefits. Aid organizations complained of discrimination against members of the Roma minority, who in some cases were denied access to housing. Many of the Roma come from Zakarpattia in western Ukraine.
