Bolsonaro fired his energy minister amid price bidding with Petrobras

Albuquerque’s departure was published this Wednesday in the Official Gazette of the Union, and in his place he will assume Adolfo Sachsidawho leaves the position of special advisor to the Minister of Economy, Paul Guedesbeing a defender of the zero parity policy for public employees and of the state’s non-intervention in the price policy of the public oil company Petrobras.

The decision was made “at the request” of the minister himself, according to the brief note signed by Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro thus replaced one of the soldiers in his cabinet, who had accompanied him since 2019 and who was considered one of the main names in his administration, in the context of criticism of his own government and Petrobras for the price policy followed by the international price of crude oil in dollars and are passed on to the domestic consumer.

This week, Petrobras applied an increase of 8.9% in diesel.

Last Thursday, Bolsonaro had asked Petrobras and the Ministry of Mines and Energy to stop the wave of increases “because Brazil is going to go bankrupt with another adjustment,” something that did not happen.

In April, Bolsonaro changed the president of Petrobras unhappy with the price policies, especially after the record and monthly inflation for March, the highest since 1994.

The ultra-conservative president had asked Petrobras to stop “the violation against the people” due to the extraordinary profits of private shareholders, the main beneficiaries of the profit generated by the policy of international fuel prices paid by Brazilians, who are paid in reais.

The electoral campaign is also marked by inflation and oil policy: Opposition candidate Lula da SIlva promised to change Petrobras’ pricing policy and resume the subsidies applied for 14 years by the governments of his Workers’ Party.

The international pricing policy was inaugurated in 2016 when it was removed Dilma Rousseff and assumed Michel Temerwhose lineaments continue under Bolsonarism.

The new Minister of Energy, the ultraliberal Sachsida, was Strategic Affairs Advisor to Minister Guedes and is one of the main theoreticians to have defended non-intervention in the price of cylinder gas for families.

The oil company, which controls the local market and has the State as the largest shareholder, reported a net profit of 44,561 million reais (8,605 million dollars) between January and March, which is about 38 times what was obtained in the first quarter of 2021.
