Democrats introduce unlikely abortion bill in Senate

If that ruling is confirmed when the high court rules on the matter before June 30, “Tens of millions of women will see their freedoms curtailed in the blink of an eye,” said on Tuesday the leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer.

The “Protecting Women’s Health” bill, already passed by the House of Representatives, creates a federal statute that would guarantee health care providers the right to perform abortions and patients the right to receive them.

But 60 votes are required to promote a final vote in the 100-member Senate, split evenly between Republicans and Democrats.

And even if they did manage to get to the vote, the Democrats would not have the 51 votes needed to pass the bill, because co-religionist Joe Manchin he opposes abortion, and voted with Republicans last February against a nearly identical version of the bill.

The only two House Republicans who support abortion rights, senators susan collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, opposed the version put up for consideration in February.
