Russia cuts gas shipments through a key gas pipeline that connects with Poland and Germany

The adoption of these against Russian sanctions “means the prohibition of using a gas pipeline belonging to the EuRoPol GAZ group (in charge of the Polish part of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, ndlr) to transport Russian gas via Poland,” Gazprom said in a statement published on Telegram.

On Wednesday, Russia announced sanctions against more than 30 companies from the European Union, the United States and Singaporein response to the punitive measures that these regions have applied to him for his military offensive in Ukraine.

Among those sanctioned is EuRoPol GAZ SA, owner of the Polish part of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, a crucial infrastructure for transporting Russian gas to Germany, via Belarus and Poland.

Gazprom added that “the Polish side had repeatedly violated Gazprom’s rights in its capacity as a shareholder of EuRoPol GAZ and on April 26, 2022 included Gazprom on the sanctioned list”, which prevents this company “from exercising its rights to EuRoPol GAZ shares and “receive dividends”.

Western sanctions against Russia are unprecedented and range from freezing Russian reserves to an embargo on strategic assets, including financial sanctions.

In return, Gazprom had already announced in April that it was suspending its gas deliveries to Bulgaria Y Polandboth members of the European Union (EU), because these countries did not want to pay in rubles.

For two days, the shipment of gas to Europe via Ukraine has been affected by the conflict.

the pipeline North Stream 1which directly links Russia with Germany, is not affected for now.

On Thursday, German Energy Minister Robert Habeck accused Russia of using energy “as a weapon.”

Gas, for now, is not among the objectives of the European Union sanctions, where debate was generated by the European Commission’s proposal to veto Russian oil. Eastern European countries dependent on this oil asked for more time to adapt and even Hungary threatened to veto this initiative.
