The 48-year-old Lhakpa Sherpa reached the top of the 8,848.88-meter mountain early Thursday morning, said the head of the expedition company Seven Summit Adventure, Mingma Gelu Sherpa, who organized the expedition and is also Lhakpa’s brother.
Previously, Lhakpa Sherpa had an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s highest number of Everest climbs by women. She grew up in Nepal and now lives with her family in the USA. Before her ascent, mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa had recently broken his Guinness record: he stood on the highest mountain in the world for the 26th time.
In total, the Nepalese Ministry of Tourism issued permits to 317 climbers in the peak Everest season this spring, which are required to climb the mountain. Foreigners have to pay $11,000 each for this. Sherpa mountain guides, porters and cooks can climb free of charge.
