Bolsonaro wants to arm the population against a Lula victory

“They know that worse than an external threat is an internal threat of communisation (sic) of our country,” said the far-right, referring to the leftist Workers’ Party (PT) of former President Lula, after which he maintained that his government “defends the family, arm the good citizen, in favor of economic freedom and freedom of expression and against abortion.”

Before an audience of rural entrepreneurs in Marincá, state of Paraná, bordering the province of Misiones, Bolsonaro encouraged the idea that armed civilians join the armed forces before a supposed “opportunity dictatorship.”

“A well-armed nation is a way to avoid any external interest in its homeland. And for you, who are from the Brazilian family, the firearm is a defense for your family and a reinforcement for our Armed Forces, because a well-armed people will never be enslaved”, he assured.

The far-right Bolsonaro praised the ruralists for arming themselves to defend their properties and criticized the existence of the peasant Movement Without Land (MST), which fights for agrarian reform and is a historical ally of Lula.

“Only dictators fear an armed people. I want every good citizen to have a firearm to resist, if necessary, the temptation of an occasional dictator”, he assured.

The president praised the presence of the public and said that “the best poll is popular applause,” rejecting the polls that increasingly give Lula the chance to defeat him in the first electoral round.

He also charged again with doubts against the Superior Electoral Court. “We are not afraid of clean elections, we want transparent elections and for everyone to play within the Constitution,” he stated in the framework of his criticism of electoral justice. The CIA recently warned Bolsonaro not to raise the specter of fraud due to fears it could spark a wave of violence.

In this context, a Brazilian army major, Joao Paulo da Costa Araujo Alves, was arrested for disobedience after posting slogans on social networks expressing his political support for the president. The 41-year-old officer was arrested last Thursday in Teresina, the capital of Piauí (northeast of the country), according to information from the G1 news portal and the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.
