“We will not stop fighting until everyone, and I mean everyone, has access to safe and legal abortions, regardless of income, zip code, or ethnicity,” said Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee, who has previously spoken publicly about her own clandestine abortion.
If the Supreme Court annulled the jurisprudence that has founded the right to abortion in the United States since 1973, as suggested by the revelation on May 2 of a draft ruling by the highest judicial body in the country, each state would be free to prohibit or authorize it.
Twenty conservative states have already promised to make abortion illegal, some even in cases of rape or incest.
“How can you tell a 12-year-old girl in Alabama who is a victim of incest that she can’t get the care she deserves?” said Rep. Diana DeGette, who co-chairs the House abortion-rights group.
Without the Supreme Court, the options to protect this right at the federal level in the United States are slim.
The Chamber voted last fall for a law that guarantees access to abortion throughout the country. But this text has not yet been endorsed by the Senatewhere the Democrats have a very narrow majority.
Eager to weigh in on the debate, several large progressive organizations have called on Americans to march en masse this weekend.
Four major marches are planned in Washington, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as hundreds of rallies across the United States.
“Americans are speaking out and making their voices heard,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.
