The TV interview after the 5-1 win against Hoffenheim was Adi Hütter’s last as coach of Mönchengladbach: The 52-year-old announced his departure after just one season after the last round of the German Bundesliga.
Just before that he had said it in the dressing room to his team. “He hugged everyone again and found nice words,” said German international Jonas Hofmann. “It was a very emotional moment that got under your skin,” said Hütter, who resigned without stepping in. Last summer, the club paid 7.5 million euros to free the Vorarlberger from Frankfurt. The farewell after a mixed season did not come as a surprise, but it was sudden. “The final decision was made on Friday,” said Hütter. “It wasn’t that easy from day one, and then the situation with Max Eberl, which really hit me,” explained Hütter. The sports director resigned in January for health reasons – the former Salzburg champion maker lost his most important advocate in the club.
Hütter had come to the Lower Rhine under different circumstances, the planned restructuring of the squad was not financially possible. But Hütter was also self-critical: “I could certainly have done one or the other better.”
Successor should be a returnee: Lucien Favre looked after Mönchengladbach from 2011 to 2015. The payroll is no longer a burden on Hütter: when the three-year contract was terminated, he made concessions to the club, as sporting director Roland Virkus said: “It shows the person and the personality of Adi Hütter. Great respect for that.” Hütter is now looking forward to a holiday: “I don’t have a plan yet on how to proceed.” Two other Bundesliga clubs became free: Wolfsburg parted ways with Florian Kohfeldt, Markus Weinzierl resigned in Augsburg.
Lewandowski wants to leave immediately
Top scorer Robert Lewandowski, on the other hand, has a clear idea: The 33-year-old informed Bayern Munich that he would not extend his contract, which expires in 2023, and would like to change in the summer. He should agree with FC Barcelona. “Both sides have to think about the future,” said the Pole after the 2-2 win over Wolfsburg. “It’s quite possible that it was my last game for FC Bayern.” His wish was the shadow at the championship celebration on the town hall balcony – and the club is not thinking of fulfilling it. “He will fulfill this contract – that’s that!” Said CEO Oliver Kahn, even if the striker could change for free in 2023.
Stuttgart saved itself
Sasa Kalajdzic has long been discussed as his successor. He celebrated the 2-1 win against Cologne with Stuttgart, which secured relegation in the last minute, even like a championship title: The ÖFB team player first missed a penalty, but then scored the 1-0 immediately afterwards. In the 92nd minute, Wataru Endo scored the winning goal that put Stuttgart in 15th place. Hertha BSC, which lost a 1-0 lead in Dortmund and conceded the 1-2 in the 84th minute, has to go into relegation because of the worse goal difference. Opponents of coach Felix Magath’s team are his former club: Hamburg trembled to third place in the second Bundesliga with a 3-2 win in Rostock. After Schalke, Bremen (2-0 against Regensburg) with Marco Friedl and Romano Schmid also fixed an immediate return to the first Bundesliga.
