77 years ago, on May 5, 1945, the Steyr-Münichholz concentration camp was liberated by US troops. To commemorate this, the Steyr Mauthausen Committee invites you to the traditional celebration at 5:30 p.m. today at the concentration camp memorial on Haagerstrasse. As the highlight of this commemoration, the well-known actor Cornelius Obonya will give the speech this time.
“Political resistance” was chosen as the thematic focus this year. People from many European countries who opposed the Nazi regime and put up courageous resistance were also imprisoned in the Steyr-Münichholz subcamp. In the city of Steyr there was a well-organized resistance of the communists, clergymen and a number of individuals also resisted the regime. The celebration will not forget the prisoners and their fates. Civil courage and courageous advocacy for human rights can be learned from them.
In the last two years, the liberation ceremony could only take place on a small scale due to the Corona measures. “We are glad that it is taking place this year as in previous years,” says Karl Ramsmaier, chairman of the Mauthausen Committee: “We are again expecting a delegation from the French camp community ‘Amicale de Mauthausen’ with President Daniel Simon.” For the first time, relatives of the Spanish prisoners will also come to Steyr. With three short biographies of little-known resistance fighters, students of the NMS Rudigier give an insight into different types of resistance. Wreaths will then be laid at the concentration camp memorial and a minute’s silence will be held.
